Our TOP five tips to Working Remotely
So we are now a few weeks into this new world and new way of working and so far we have seen and been sent so many articles talking about remote working; the do’s, do not’s and so much in between.
Having been lucky over the past number of years in that remote working isn’t a new concept to us – we have put our top five tips to remote working and staying sane while working from home.
In the past when we have worked remotely, the kitchen or dining room table would suffice for the occasional work from home routine. But this time is very different; we estimate that the status quo around working from home will be in place for three months at the very least, as such you really need somewhere in your home where you can ‘set up shop’ on a more permanent basis. You will also need to ensure that this place isn’t too close to an area where you relax/sleep if possible, because let’s face it – the last thing you want to see when you go to sleep or the first thing in the morning when you wake is your workstation and that to-do list.
Organise your time
Review what you need to do on a daily basis and then write down other tasks that you do during the day in order to gauge your productivity. As you complete each task – write it down and rank it A, B, C or D.
A – should be a time sensitive or urgent task
B – should be a mid level task, something that needs to be completed within the next 48 hours but isn’t time sensitive
C – should be a low level task, something that will need to be done at some point but if it gets put off for a day or a week it will have minimal impact.
D – Dicking About
If you do this truthfully, chances are as you begin writing down everything that you do during the course of the working day – the number of D’s will heavily outweigh the number of A-C’s, but as you get into the routine – you will see the D’s reduce, and the A’s and B’s increase.
Working from home could mean that your work based technology (laptop etc) could be at a higher risk than when in the workplace. Prior to working from home/remotely – your IT person or department should have ensured you have all the required security in place for your job role and also that you can access company data and systems securely using things like VPN or Terminal Access for company data and Multi factor Authentication for cloud based services such as Microsoft 365 or a CRM.
Also, has your IT person/department given you instructions and guidance on remaining up to date with updates and patches for your company issued kit. If you don’t know how, get in touch with us or your IT department ASAP.
Take Breaks, but don’t take the mickey…
Those tea/coffee breaks that you take in the workplace are even more important now that you are working from home, but you need to ensure that you are sensible with the number of breaks – 5 minute break for every 90 minutes is a fairly good benchmark.
Remember that just because you are at home, it doesn’t mean that those 5 minute breaks should be stretched to 10-15 minutes in order for you to give you enough time to do the washing up or cleaning the house – you are at work – even though you are at home.
Stay in regular contact with your colleagues
You are not alone, your colleagues and the people you work with and deal with (customers, suppliers etc) are all in similar positions so stay in touch and don’t isolate yourself. In these uncertain times it is super important from a mental health perspective to keep in contact, so if someone in your workplace hasn’t already – why not set up a weekly video call so that you can talk about your week from a work perspective but also just to shoot the breeze.
