As a consumer, buying a mobile phone is relatively simple and essentially it is just a transaction.
You choose which network/provider you want to be with (FYI – Tesco Mobile, Sky Mobile etc are not network operators), the phone you want and the calls, texts and data bundle that you need/want and that’s it. With a business contract – it is completely different.
There are a number of different steps that you should really look to follow to ensure you get the best VALUE from your mobile phone fleet, regardless of whether it is one or 100 devices, as you do this you need to ensure you consider the needs of your business at every point.
With that all being said, here are our 10 tips to consider when choosing mobile phones for your business.
Tip 1. How does the business use phones today?
Before you make any sort of decisions you need to ensure you are informed about how your business is currently using its mobile communications. Ask your team how they are using their mobiles to determine what plans they may need, and also what features they need.
Questions you could ask them include:
- How often do you make calls? Do you need the phone during business hours? Evenings and weekends?
- Where do you call? Are the calls local or do you make international calls too?
- How often do employees use mobile data?
Tip 2. Have you considered your security requirements?
It is imperative for businesses that their sensitive/secure data, private conversations and financial information remains safe and secure.
Mobiles can present a challenge because of a number of vulnerabilities including open Wi-Fi connections, hacking & theft. Ensure you consider who can access your critical data from a mobile device and ensure they are protected with things like strong paswords, remote wipe and other mobile management processes.
Tip 3. Ensure your research the apps you & your team use
Business software and tools are easily available on mobile devices through App Stores, some are paid for while others are free (or freemium if it offers paid for services post download).
Different devices have different apps. If you choose Android phones, for example, but use an app only available through Apple, you will have to make adjustments. Compatible software helps work to flow more smoothly so ensure that the device choices are relevant and consistent.
Tip 4. Be Organised in your approach
Each type of phone offers handy tools such as calendars, reminders, password keepers, and other features.
Organising the work day and keeping track of your employees is important.
Choose devices that makes it easy to do so. Being able to sync your phone calendar to your business agenda or look up your password streamlines your and your team’s working day.
Tip 5. Batteries...
Unlike business phone systems mobile devices have batteries.
Some mobile phones have longer battery lives than others. If you travel for business or are away from a power source for long periods of time, you’ll need a reliable phone.
Factor in battery life when making decisions about handset choices; or at least get some good power banks for your teams.
Tip 6. Coverage can be an issue
Businesses need to connect with their customers. A missed call, poor connection, or unavailable service can hurt your bottom line.
Most mobile phone carriers provide a map of each service area. Choose a phone carrier who meets your business coverage needs. Ofcom also have a coverage checker and we would recommend using this as a starting point.
A low cost plan or good deal on phones does not solve the problem of missed customer calls!
Tip 7. Pick devices based on the role & environment
On the road sales people who are often in cars or at meetings will require different handsets to that of a builder or plumber.
Assessing whether all employees work in the same environment is as crucial is assessing what your overall business needs are.
It may be that certain groups of employees are better suited to certain handsets and others will need more robust models.
Tip 8. Cost will always be a factor
Budgeting communication costs may be an important concern, but the price tag needs to be weighed against the benefit to your business.
Make sure your business has a phone service plan that fits its needs. Factor in the following,
- Cost of the mobile phones
- Monthly service fees
- Cost of any additional fees / out of bundle charges etc.
Tip 9. Let's talk bills
In can be tempting to just get a mobile as and when you need one for new employees.
9 out of 10 times, this means that businesses will go to different providers getting different handsets and the potential headache arrives when you begin getting lots of different bills.
When you start to accumulate lots of phone bills it can become very difficult to manage. Most business mobile providers give their customers access to a billing platform so they can monitor usage and billing in almost real-time.
Tip 10. Get some help
Finding the right mobile solution take times and effort; and in the long term money.
Whilst managing a busy business, time is not a commodity in abundance. It can therefore be wise to get help with selecting the right deals for your business.
